Event Details

The Legatum Institute Courage in Journalism Award was conceived following the murder of the renowned Maltese investigative journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia in October 2017. In consultation with Daphne's family, the team at the Institute decided to create the award with two aims: to honour her legacy and to highlight the dangers that journalists continue to face today in countries around the world.

These dangers are very real. Almost 1000 journalists have been killed in the past decade, with an alarming number deliberately targeted – as Daphne was – for shining a spotlight on corruption and injustice. In recognition of this alarming statistic, the Courage in Journalism Award is a posthumous award, designed to recognise journalists whose determination to tell the stories that needed to be told had ultimately cost them their lives.

The recipient of this year's award has been decided by a stellar judging panel comprising of Christina Lamb OBE, Chief Foreign Correspondent at The Sunday Times; Con Coughlin, Defence Editor at The Telegraph; Mike Thomson, the BBC's World Affairs Correspondent; and former Financial Times journalist and Member of the House of Lords David Freud.

The event will highlight the growing risks facing journalists in countries around the world with testimony from our expert panel including:

  • Christina Lamb OBE – Chief Foreign Correspondent, Sunday Times
  • Mike Thomson – World Affairs Editor, BBC
  • Laurent Richard – Director, Forbidden Stories
  • Bill Neely – Former Foreign Correspondent, ITV News, NBC News
  • Azurra Moores - Reporters without Borders,
