Event Details

Protests in Kazakhstan's economic centre, Almaty, gained momentum killing and injuring thousands of people including police and civilians. The events were sparked by a doubling in the cost of liquefied petroleum gas and threaten to reverberate across the region.

Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev yesterday dismissed his government and declared a state of emergency. Claiming to be facing "terrorist groups" that have "received extensive training abroad", he yesterday asked for help from the Collective Security Treaty Organisation (CSTO), of which Russia is a member, which agreed today to send "peacekeeping forces".

Join our online panel, in partnership with Reporters Without borders, as they discuss the breaking news coming out of Kazakhstan and the international consequences.
